AMALA PAUL excited about 2012....

  Amala Paul couldn't be happier.
She has three big films lined up for release —
  • Vettai,
  •  Muppozhuthum Un Karpanaigal (MUK) and
  • Kadhalil Sodhapuvadhu Yeppadi (KSE).
“Each of these is different. I'm excited about 2012,” she says.

The young actor, back after a holiday with family and friends in Ooty and Goa, is kicked about her career path. She turns glam in director Lingusamy's Vettai, releasing on January 14, where she's paired opposite Arya. “I play a glamorous village belle, Jayanthi. It is a commercial flick, but my role will change the way people perceive me,” she says.

Shooting was a breeze. “There are few people as genuine as Sameera Reddy. We stayed in the same hotel, the same room, like siblings. With Maddy and Arya, we hit the gym together, went out for group dinners… it was like family; Lingu sir was the father figure,” she laughs.

She will next appear in Elred Kumar's Atharva-starrer MUK. “It's a dream role. You can't slot this movie. It has friendship, love, action, thrills… I play Charulatha, born and brought up in the U.S. It's the first time I play a character close to my age, with a co-star my age. The lines between reel and real blurred. It felt like I was back in college. Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon… the outdoor schedule was fun,” she says.

There's a lot of buzz about talented rookie director Balaji Mohan's KSE, hugely popular in its short-film avatar. The flick, about lovers and their tiffs, stars Amala and yuppie-hottie Siddharth. “I first heard about KSE while doingMynaa, and loved what I saw. Imagine being offered the film! I laughed non-stop during the narration. It is such a beautiful script. I thought of my friends, their love stories, the spats…. everything was so familiar. As for inspiration, I just had to imitate my friends. Working with Siddharth is great. He's talented and has great energy,” she says. Amala says she is in a happy space. “I'm never insecure and I never plan. I don't get disappointed. My career is nothing short of a miracle. I feel I'm God's child. I make my choices and stick by them,” says the confident actor. “I can laugh and cry without a second thought. I can't fake my emotions. Even when I commit a blunder, I learn from that.”

In 2011, she debuted in Telugu with Bejawada starring Naga Chaitanya. “I had to learn the dialogues by rote. I give my best when I understand the meaning. But, the experience was good. Now, I know enough Telugu to return to the hotel if get lost!”

Bollywood dreams? “Who wouldn't love to act with Hrithik and Aamir? But, I don't look at Bollywood as a career progression. The script will decide if I want to make a move northwards. It has to please the actor in me.”

The one thing about 2012 she dreads? “I'll have to write my college semester exams with my juniors. I was shooting in Las Vegas during the exams. My friends won't stop ribbing me about this,” she laughs.
